Bartrum thought the story could have been invented around the late 12th or early 13th century by the monks at Glastonbury looking for ways of attracting visitors to their monastery. From Jose down to Teithfall (born c.300), spans 14 generations over 280 years, about 20 years per generation, a convenient round figure.
