[GER2231] Werner I (born c.814), Prefekt der Ostlanden.

[GER2241] Werner II [born c.837], married Oda von Wormsgau.

[GER2261] Werner IV (born c.875), Count, married [FRAZ282] Konradinerin ([born c.890], daughter of DUKE CONRAD I, see FRANCONIA DUKEDOM). He died c.917-19.

[GER2271] Conrad II the red (born c.918, grandson of EMPEROR CONRAD I, through his daughter) married (947) [SAXY282] Liutgarde (born 931, daughter of EMPEROR OTTO, see SAXONY (LIUDOLFIN HOUSE) NOBILITY). He was DUKE OF FRANCONIA (939-55), DUKE OF LOTHARINGIA (944-53), deposed from Lotharingia (953), and died at Lechfeld, near Augsburg, Bavaria, (10th August 955). Liutgarde died 18th November 953.

[GER2281] Otto von Worms (born c.948) was DUKE OF FRANCONIA (955-85 & 995-1004); DUKE OF CARINTHIA (977-83 & 995-1004), married either Judith (born c.952, daughter of Count Henry, see LORRAINE (HOUSE OF VERDUN) DUKEDOM) or Judith (born c.952, daughter of Count Heinrich of Bavaria, see BAVARIA (LUITPOLDING DYNASTY) DUKEDOM). Judith died 991, and Otto died 4th November 1004.

[GER2291] Heinrich II, Count of Speyer, (born 970, son of Otto) married Adelaide of Egisheim. He was DUKE OF FRANCONIA (985-95), and died 995. Adelheid afterwards married 2. a French Count, and died c.1039-46.

[GER2301] Conrad II the Salic or the Speyerian (born 990) married 1. ---; then 2. (c.1016) [SWA2308] Gisela (born 11th November 989, see SWABIA DUKEDOM). He was King of Lombards (1026), EMPEROR OF THE ROMANS (1024-39), DUKE OF FRANCONIA (1030-39), King of Burgundy (1033), and died at Utrecht (4th June 1039), and was buried in Speyer Cathedral (4th July 1039). Gisela died at Goslar (16th February 1043), and was also buried in Speyer Cathedral. There are two modern plaques in the imperial crypt at Speyer at Cathedral, inscribed in Latin, to Conrad and Gisela, which read as follows:

[GER2321] Heinrich III the black (born at Ostrebeck, 28th October 1017) married 1. (29th June 1036) Gunhild (otherwise Kunigunde, daughter of King Cnut of Denmark & Emma). She died in Italy (18th July 1038), and was buried at Limburg Monastery); then 2. (at Ingelheim, 20th November 1043) [AQUI342] Agnes (born 1024, daughter of DUKE WILLIAM V, see AQUITAINE (HOUSE OF POITIERS) DUKEDOM). Heinrich was DUKE (HEINRICH VI) OF BAVARIA (1027-41 & 1047-49), King (Heinrich III) of Germany (1028), DUKE OF FRANCONIA (1039-56), EMPEROR OF THE ROMANS (1039-56), and died at Bodfeld/Harz, near Goslar, (4th October 1056), and was buried in Speyer Cathedral (28th October 1056). There is a modern plaque in the imperial crypt at Speyer Cathedral, inscribed in Latin, to Heinrich, which read as follows:

Agnes was DUCHESS OF BAVARIA (1056-61), and Regent for her young son (1056-). However when he came of age, she refused to relinquish the throne. She continued to rule until ousted by two German bishops (1062), and afterwards lived in Rome until her death there (14th December 1077).

[GER2332] Princess Matilda (born October 1048, daughter of Heinrich & Agnes) married (1059) [RHEJ431] DUKE RUDOLPH OF SWABIA (see RHEINFELDEN COUNTY).

[GER2331] Heinrich IV senior (born at Goslar in Saxony, 11th November 1050, son of Heinrich III & Agnes) married 1. (at Tribur, 13th July 1066) [SAVO372] Bertha of Turin (see SAVOY COUNTY). She died at Mainz (27th December 1087) and was originally buried at Mainz, then afterwards in the imperial crypt in Speyer Cathedral. Heinrich then married 2. (14th August 1089) Adelheid (daughter of Prince Vsevolod I of Kiev), divorced 1095. He was DUKE (HEINRICH VIII) OF BAVARIA (1055-61 & 1077-96), DUKE OF FRANCONIA (1056-1106), King (Heinrich IV) of Germany (1056-1105, abdicated), EMPEROR OF THE ROMANS (1084-1105, deposed), died (whilst excommunicated) at Liege (7th August 1106), and placed in a chapel at Speyer Cathedral. After his excommunication ban had been lifted (August 1111), his coffin was moved to the imperial crypt. There are two modern plaques in the crypt at Speyer Cathedral, inscribed in Latin, to Bertha and Heinrich, which read as follows:

In 1689, the tomb of Bertha was broken into and ransacked. Adelheid died 1109.

[GER2349] Princess Agnes (born 1072-73, daughter of Heinrich IV & Bertha) married 1. [SWAB331] DUKE FREDERICK I (see SWABIA (HOUSE OF HOHENSTAUFEN) DUKEDOM, died April 1105); then 2. (1106) [AUST411] March Count Leopold III (see AUSTRIA MARCH COUNTY & DUKEDOM).
