HOLY ROMAN EMPIRE

The Carolingian Empire was virtually co-terminus with Latin Christendom, i.e. it excluded the British Isles and the Byzantine Empire which extended as far west as southern Italy. It was therefore effectively a Roman Empire, as distinct from that of Constantinople. After Charlemagne's death the empire was divided between his three sons, and the title of Emperor became more of a courtesy title. At different times there could be more than one competing emperor, and occasionally an emperor would "rule" with his son, who was then termed co-emperor. Eventually the title devolved to the German throne. Some holders first took the title Emperor, and were then crowned at a later date, others were never crowned.

The holder generally assumed the title of simply Emperor, though from 967 it became Emperor of the Romans, and the adjective Holy was introduced by Frederick III barbarossa (1157).

These are extracts of various persons who became Emperors, from various French, Italian or German Houses, and they are all mentioned elsewhere as appropriate.
