VOSE
in Lancashire

There is a reference to a Thurstan Vasse marrying Christian Webster at Upholland, near Wigan, and their first-born, Thurstane, was baptised on Christmas Day 1676. So the forename Thurstan was by no means unique about that period.

Around 1700, there were two families named Vose at Sefton (Thurstan and Alexander), and there was also John Vose at nearby Formby.

The confirmation of a link between the Vose families at Sefton and Rainford is Esther Vose (born at Thornton in Sefton, 1709) who married (at Sefton, 1730) Joseph Birch. The Birch family moved from Lunt to Rainford (between 1736 and 1738), probably following Esther's elder brother William Vose (born at Lunt, 1704), who was at Rainford by 1728.

[VOSE611] Thurstan Vose and his wife Mary had three children born at Lunt, a hamlet close to Sefton, and baptised at Sefton as follows:

Alexander (baptised 5th April 1702);

[VOSE621] William (baptised 14th January 1704-05), married Jane Minshall, see later;

Esther (baptised 20th May 1707), died young;

Four later children were born at Thornton, another hamlet close to Sefton, and baptised at Sefton as follows:

Mary (baptised 1st August 1708);

Esther (baptised October 1709), married Joseph Birch. Joseph & Esther had three children born at Lunt (1731-36), followed by six children born at Rainford (1738-52). Esther was buried at Rainford (7th July 1758), and Joseph was buried there also (16th June 1782);

Elizabeth (baptised 23rd August 1713);

Thurstan (baptised 16th March 1714-15).

The family later moved from Thornton to Rainford, where Thurstan was Chapel Warden (1729), though when Esther married (at Sefton, 1730) she said she was "of this parish". Mary died at Rainford (buried there 4th February 1739-40), and Thomas died at Rainford also (buried there 17th April 1742).

[VOSE621] William Vose (born 1705), a labourer, married (at Prescot, 22nd April 1728) [MINS622] Jane Minshall (born 1706, see MINSHALL), both of Rainford.

(at Prescot, 22nd April 1781) [ELLI642] Pheby Ellison (born 1750, see ELLISON), both of Windle, witnessed by William Banister (parish clerk) and Thomas Calderbank.
